First time seeing a psychologist- What to expect?

At Tonic Psychology we understand that the first therapy session can often be the most nerve-wracking, especially if you do not know what the session with comprise of. So, here we seek to explain what one can expect from their first counselling session with the Mindfit team

Tonic Psychology Counselling

The first counselling session is generally reserved for your psychologist to get to know you and understand what you want to achieve from counselling. Therefore, the first question that you can expect to receive will likely be something like “What brings you here today?”.

Then your psychologist will ask a series of questions to gain an understanding of your life experiences and any difficulties you may be facing.

From there, your psychologist can use this understanding to develop a strategy to provide you with mental health support and assistance. They will take you through the first steps and strategies for your personalised mental health plan and give you a thorough rundown of what to expect.

It is advisable to come to your first session prepared, with a clear idea of what you want to speak about, and even written notes of what you would like to cover in your treatment. However, this is not integral; the most important thing is showing up.
