NDIS Explained – Where Does Psychology Fit?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme often referred to as the NDIS, is the government’s new way of funding support and care for Australians with disabilities. Different providers work together with the NDIS to ensure every Australian receives support tailored for them and their individual needs.
If you have a disability, you are probably well-versed on the NDIS. But do you know where psychology and mental health fits in?
Who Can Access NDIS-Funded Mental Health Support?
Although the NDIS is an all-encompassing funding provider for Australians with disabilities, it is not designed to provide treatment for those with mental illness. Instead, people with disabilities are able access relevant care, including support from counsellors and psychologists, through their tailored plan. If an individual has a mental illness that causes significant impairment, they may also be eligible for NDIS mental health support.
Confused? Don’t Worry, We’re Here To Explain!
Basically, if you have a disability and supports such as counselling are included in your NDIS plan, NDIS mental health care is an option for you. Australians who have what is categorised as a psychosocial disability are also able to access NDIS mental health support.
Although funding counselling and psychology is not the main aim of the NDIS, mental health support is an important part of wellness and empowerment for those with disabilities. A qualified counsellor can help individuals with community engagement, day-to-day living skills, and of course, emotional support.
Living a disability in today’s world can be stressful, and even exhausting. Some people with disabilities seek the support of a counsellor just to chat about these issues with someone who understands. Others visit a psychologist to help them cope with new challenges and tough situations that affect their emotional health and wellness.
If you live with a disability, you might be wondering whether you need NDIS mental health support. Regardless of what you decide, it is important to know that help is available if you decide to seek support.
